What is a Disklavier?
The "Disklavier" is the name for a group of reproduction pianos from the YAMAHA Corporation brand, which were introduced in the USA in 1987. The name is a combination of the words "disk" and "piano", as at that time the recordings for these instruments were stored on 3 1/2 inch floppy disks. The Disklavier is basically an acoustic piano, manufactured in the form of upright pianos, grand pianos and large concert grands and equipped with a built-in recording and playback system (MIDI sound module). As the instruments are equipped with electromagnets, they can recognize the keys and pedal movements using optical sensors, store the data and then reproduce the performance independently without a pianist. Disklaviers have 256 gradations in pedal position detection and 1024 nuances in key velocity, which means that duration and agogic can be precisely recorded. While the Disklavier can be used as a reproduction piano for recording conventional piano pieces, there are now also some original compositions especially for this instrument.
