Piano tuning - why and how often?
or to put it casually: Why and how often should our piano tuner be allowed to visit you?
As a piano is largely made of wood, it is affected by changes in humidity and temperature. These changes affect the tension of the strings via the soundboard and "detune" your upright/grand piano.
The indoor climate fluctuates considerably, especially at the start of the heating periods in the fall and vice versa in the spring. And the wood starts to work.
We recommend having the piano tuned by a specialist once a year. If the room climate fluctuates greatly and the piano is used intensively, it can also be tuned every six months.
A piano that has been out of tune for a long time is usually more difficult to bring back into tune and may require several appointments.
Indoor climate tip
Your upright/grand piano should be protected against moisture and overheating. Exposure to direct sunlight and draughts can damage the instrument, as can too high or too low a level of humidity. The best environment is around 18 to 24 degrees Celsius and a humidity of 45 to 65%.
You can use a hygrometer to check the humidity. However, your plants, which are watered regularly, also increase the humidity in rooms.
In our two-part tips & tricks video (end of page) "How to keep your piano in tune" we show you how it works.
We will be happy to advise you in detail.
What happens when we tune a piano?
1. the piano tuning
Piano tuning is the process of adjusting the pitch and intonation of an upright and grand piano to ensure that it sounds harmonious and that every note sounds at the correct pitch.
The piano tuning process begins with the piano tuner tuning the instrument to a reference pitch. This is normally A440 Hz. He uses a tuner or tuning fork to do this.
The piano tuner tunes every note of the piano and grand piano, paying attention to the harmonic relationship between the different notes and the intonation of the individual strings. Intonation is about ensuring that each string is perfectly in tune in a chorus with other strings to achieve a uniform and harmonious sound quality.
After the piano tuner has tuned the entire piano, he can fine-tune it to ensure that every note sounds perfect. This may also require several passes.
2. interior cleaning
Over the years, the strings of a piano begin to oxidize on the surface due to the natural humidity in the air.
We use a special cleaning process to clean the strings and remove dust from the entire acoustic system and mechanics.
3. the regulation
The piano action is readjusted - for a perfect playing feel.
