What is a hybrid piano?

Hybrid instruments" are basically musical instruments that combine the essential features of two or more different instruments in one. For example, the "bassoforte" is made up of parts of an electric bass guitar and a piano, while the "Experibass" contains various string instruments.

The "hybrid piano" combines classical upright and grand piano technology with digital technology. In contrast to purely acoustic or purely digital instruments, they combine physical strings with digital sound generators. They therefore represent an innovative fusion of traditional piano making with modern technology and are intended to combine the advantages of acoustic pianos, such as polyphonic aspects (polyphony, polyphony) and the typical playing feel, with the advantages of digital pianos, such as detailed volume control, additional functions, MIDI interfaces, etc. in one instrument. Another characteristic feature is the use of high-quality samples of acoustic pianos, which are played back via loudspeakers or headphones, while the keyboard and touch are similar to those of a traditional piano.

There are basically two types of hybrid pianos:

  • Digital pianos with acoustic elements
  • Acoustic pianos with digital elements

As the respective proportions of digital and classic elements can vary, the features, construction methods and sound generation differ between the individual models and manufacturers.
