What is an electric/digital piano?

Electric pianos/digital pianos are fully electronic instruments (electric pianos) that always require electricity to operate.

Electric piano and digital piano are terms that we generally use interchangeably. Nevertheless, we prefer to use the term digital pianos for higher-quality models in our product descriptions.

How much does a good electric piano for beginners cost?

A good electric piano for beginners usually costs between 450 and 1500 euros. The price depends on the brand, the functions and the sound quality. Of course, the size and quality of materials such as plastic, wood, keyboard etc. also play an important role. For beginners, models in the middle price segment are often sufficient. It is advisable to try out different models before buying.

If you value a good sound and an authentic playing feel, invest in a high-quality digital piano from € 1,000.

What is the difference between keyboards and electric/digital pianos?

The soundboard in the piano amplifies the vibrations of the sound. This acoustic process creates the special sound of a piano. In an electric piano, the keys trigger an electrical impulse that makes the notes sound.

The electric piano and keyboard are both electronic keyboard instruments, but they have some significant differences.

Sound and objectives

E-pianos/digital pianos are designed to reproduce the sound and feel of an acoustic piano as accurately as possible.
Keyboards offer a wide range of sounds, from piano sounds to many other instruments and synthetic sounds.

Keyboard and touch

Electric/digital pianos usually have weighted keys that resemble the touch of an acoustic piano and are often based on hammer action mechanisms.
Keyboards often have lighter, unweighted keys that feel significantly different.

Number of buttons

A standard electric/digital piano has 88 keys, just like an acoustic piano.
Keyboards can have a varying number of keys, often 61 or 76

Functionality and additional functions

Keyboards often offer automatic accompaniment, rhythms and the ability to record and play back different tracks. Digital pianos generally focus more on the piano sound and offer fewer of these additional functions.

Portability and design

Many electric/digital pianos are housed in a case that resembles a traditional piano, but there are also portable versions.
Keyboards are generally lighter and easier to transport.
