GROTRIAN STEINWEG
Pianos
For the love of music. Made in Germany.
Pianos for the highest demands.
Since 1835, the German piano manufacturer GROTRIAN STEINWEG in Braunschweig has been producing exquisite upright and grand pianos for the highest demands in terms of playing pleasure, tonal range, durability and aesthetics. The instruments are handcrafted to 80% with an incomparable attention to detail.
Grotrian-Steinweg was the first to construct an instrument in which the plate is only screwed to the rim of the back, allowing the inside to vibrate freely, for an unmistakable sound characteristic - even in the pianos produced today. Other developments include the homogeneous soundboard with finely matched woods and a string calculation that ensures that the hammer always hits the string at the optimum point. And not to forget: the patented star detent.

GROTRIAN STEINWEG *The story
PIONEERING SPIRIT
The GROTRIAN STEINWEG piano factory has been family-owned for six generations. And one thing has never changed over the years: The love of music.
It was and is a driving force - sometimes even for unusual steps. In 1830, Friedrich Grotrian left Germany and went to Moscow as a music dealer. The city flourished and attracted many artists such as Clara Schumann, Franz Liszt and A. Rubinstein. Friedrich Grotrian knew many artists very well and had a feel for what was important to them in the sound of an instrument.
And so he began to build pianos. Pianos that were loved by artists.
When Friedrich Grotrian returned home, he met Theodor Steinweg and became a partner in the piano manufactory founded by his father in 1835.
VISION ART
As early as the end of the 19th century, Wilhelm Grotrian sent his sons Willi and Kurt Grotrian-Steinweg on international trips so that they could gain experience in piano making. They knew how to combine the knowledge they had acquired in this way with the craftsmanship they had acquired in Germany. The result was - among many others still used in piano making today groundbreaking inventions – the typical Grotrian-Steinweg star-shaped rest and the much appreciated small piano.
With economic effect in 2015, the company has a new shareholder, the Parsons Music Group, a family business based in Hong Kong. The Parsons Music Group is one of the world's largest manufacturers and distributors with its own production facilities in China for upright and grand pianos and other musical instruments. With this economically strong shareholder, the Grotrian-Steinweg company has been placed on a secure foundation for the future in order to successfully master the challenges of the global markets and continue to live the 185-year tradition.
At the Braunschweig site, GROTRIAN-STEINWEG's highly qualified and experienced employees will continue to Grand and upright pianos made by hand manufactured to the highest quality.
SUSTAINABILITY
Metal The cast-iron frames are produced using a modern casting process that protects both employees and the environment from emissions and guarantees almost perfect surfaces.
Keyboards In the past, keyboard coverings were made of ivory. However, the use of this material endangers the survival of elephants and walruses. For this reason, a special plastic was developed which, when highly polished, offers a smooth and warm feel.
Wood and glue To prevent the wood from warping and to give it particular strength, it is glued in several layers - especially if it has a load-bearing, structural function.
Lacquer Grotrian-Steinweg is a pioneer in the industry when it comes to the use of environmentally friendly varnishes, paints and stains. The piano manufacturer has always attached particular importance to protecting the environment and the health of its employees. The company has just invested in a new water-sprinkled spray booth. This sucks the paint mist into the circulating water and then separates it using special binding agents. This keeps the air unpolluted and the paint sludge residues are removed from the water before it is returned to the circulation system.
