WILH.STEINBERG *The story

Adolph Geyr, founder of the Eisenberg pianoforte manufactory, was born in Eisenberg in 1846 as the third son of the piano leather manufacturer Eduard Geyr.

In order to expand his knowledge, Adolf Geyr decided to emigrate to America after completing his training. He had the great opportunity to continue his training in piano making in Canada and New York and finally returned to his home town in 1877 and founded his first pianoforte manufactory.

As in other companies, there were sales problems with pianos and grand pianos during the Second World War. Production was changed at short notice and the company shifted to the production of soles for clogs.

After 1945, the "Adolph Geyr Nachf. GmbH" piano factory and precious wood processing plant in Adolph Geyr Strasse and Bahnhofstrasse produced pianos to meet the needs of the civilian sector at the time. The former piano factory produced a large number of two-door closets for the resettlers, as well as radio cabinets and, for the first time, pianos as reparations. The traditional upright piano production was thus continued. In 1947, the first 50 "Geyer" brand pianos were produced. The annual target of reparations in piano construction for 1948 was already achieved by July. By order of the SMAD, the company was transferred to public ownership in 1948 and renamed "VEB Pianofabrik Eisenberg". The increasing demand for pianos made it necessary to move to the vacated production halls in Mozartstraße. Large-scale production of pianos was set up and subsidized by the state. The training center for piano makers also found its home in Eisenberg and was affiliated with the company.

With the fall of communism in 1989, a new era also begins for the piano industry in Eisenberg. On 01.01.1993, Mr. Helmut Altmeyer acquires the "Eisenberger Pianofortefabrik" from the Treuhand and introduces the company to the market with a completely new product line. Since then, WILH. STEINBERG has continued the traditions that originated in the pianoforte factory founded by Adolph Geyer in 1877.
