What are the main differences between an upright piano and a digital piano?

Which one would you recommend? These are some of the most common questions we are asked time and again. And rightly so. Because there are also factors that can have a decisive influence on the choice.

How much budget do you have available? Would you like to take the instrument with you sometimes?

How important are additional digital features to you? Do you have a personal preference?

The digital piano

is a fully electronic instrument that always requires electricity to operate.

While the keys are becoming more and more similar to their acoustic counterparts, the weight and touch of many instruments are already very similar to a piano touch, but the weight and touch are often much lighter and offer less control.

The sound of a digital piano has become better and better in recent years. But there will always be this one difference: you will only ever hear a digital recording of the sound (samples) when you strike the keys.

The advantages:

The use of numerous digital applications

There are already very affordable entry-level pianos

If you have limited space, the digital piano is a good alternative

If you prefer to play pop music, for example, or would like to take your instrument with you, or if your room situation requires it, digital pianos offer a very good alternative

The disadvantages:

The unique experience of playing on a real acoustic upright or grand piano cannot be achieved.

The acoustic/real piano

With upright and grand pianos, the sound is created at the exact moment it is created - and each time this sound is unique, just as you set it. This acoustic live experience is essential for two reasons: firstly, the action gives you a genuine and incomparable playing feel that optimally develops the finger touch, and secondly, the acoustic sound sensitizes the ear to the finest tonal nuances and thus ensures a true listening and playing experience.

The advantages:

The sound is self-formed and unique

Ear training is encouraged

Due to the natural materials, you can individualize playing on a piano from player to player over generations

Depending on the brand, an acoustic piano is an investment for generations

By expanding a silent system, many digital advantages can be utilized while retaining the sound and playability of a real piano.

The disadvantages:

The disadvantages can be found in the size, depending on the space available, and in the higher purchase costs for more exclusive models and silent pianos.

Questions about music schools

A question we are asked very often:

"Our child is starting to play the piano at music school and we don't yet know whether he will stick with it. Should we start with an inexpensive keyboard?"

A keyboard usually has no keys and differently weighted keys and is therefore not suitable for learning the correct touch technique.

Our recommendation in this case is to buy an acoustic piano. With or without a silent function, depending on your preference.
